Introduction to Buddhism

June 5—July 17
1st & 3rd Mondays, 7-8:30pm | $10
Although Buddhism is an ancient religion that first appeared in the East, the practices taught by Buddha are timeless and universally applicable. These days, many people are discovering that Buddhism has answers to questions and solutions to problems that cannot be found anywhere else.
In this series, you will gain an understanding of basic Buddhist concepts that include the nature of the mind, past and future lives, and karma. You will also learn how meditation and wisdom can be used to solve our daily problems, reduce stress, improve relationships, and create a happy and meaningful life.
Week 1—Who was Buddha?
Buddha Shakyamuni, born Prince Siddharta, showed the example of how to use our human life to transcend suffering and increase our capacity to benefit others. The story of his life has many practical lessons and inspires us to make the most of our life.
Week 2—Understanding the Mind
The mind, or consciousness, is a fascinating topic to explore. If we understand its nature, we will come to realize that we are travellers to future lives and lessen our anxiety and obsessive concern for the transient experiences and possessions of this life.
Week 3—Meditation & Mindfulness
It is our habits of mind that actually determine whether our life is happy or miserable. Meditation is an actual method to change our mind for the better and create inner peace which is the real source of happiness.
Week 4—What is Karma?
Understanding Karma empowers us to create the future we want and increases our compassion for others.
Week 5—Now is the Time
If we recognize that our human life gives us a rare and precious opportunity to put an end to problems and pain, we won’t waste it. Instead, we will learn to create the causes for future happiness for ourself and others.
Week 6—The Buddhist Way of Life
How do we put Buddhist wisdom in to practice in our daily life? and how can we come under the protection of enlightened beings?
