How to Understand the Mind: The Nature and Power of the Mind
Join us as we begin an extraordinary journey exploring together How to Understand the Mind, The Nature and Power of the Mind. This book offers us deep insight into our mind, and shows how an understanding of its nature and functions can be used practically in everyday experience to improve our lives.
ABOUT THE BOOK
This book offers us deep insight into our mind, and shows how an understanding of its nature and functions can be used practically in every day experience to improve our lives.
Part 1 is a practical guide to developing and maintaining a light, positive mind – showing how to recognize and abandon states of mind that harm us, and to replace them with peaceful and beneficial ones.
Part 2 describes different types of mind in detail, revealing the depth and profundity of the Buddhist understanding of the mind. It concludes with a detailed explanation of meditation, showing how by controlling and transforming our mind we can attain a lasting state of joy, independent of external conditions.
WHAT IS FOUNDATION PROGRAM (FP)?
Foundation Program is a structured study program that provides continual teachings from one book until it is complete. Students try to attend each class, engage in longer meditations, actively interact with fellow Sangha during discussion, and study and read outside of class. By applying consistent effort in this way, we naturally build our confidence and ability to practice Dharma in daily life, create strong connections with our community of Dharma practitioners and joyfully make progress on our spiritual journey.
• guided meditations
• commentary to the text
• discussion (in pairs and as a group)
• Q & A
WHY JOIN FP?
If you’ve been regularly attending drop-in meditation classes (General Program), joining Foundation Program is the next step in deepening your practical experience of Buddha’s teachings.
Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso has designed three special spiritual programs for the study and practice of Kadampa Buddhism specifically for people of the modern world. His programs are: General Program, basic introduction of Kadampa Buddhism, Foundation Program, basic foundation of Kadampa Buddhism, and Teacher Training Program, training to become a qualified Kadampa teacher. If you would like to know more, contact [email protected].
WHAT WILL WE STUDY?
The program is based on a systematic study of six Kadampa Buddhist texts written by NKT founder Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso. The oral transmission of the book combined with guided meditations and discussion will build our confidence to apply Dharma in daily life.
During the week, we put effort into remembering the teachings we have heard and the text we have studied and by doing so, we will begin to transform our mind from ordinary to extraordinary. We also build a connection with the teachings and spiritual friends, making Foundation Program the perfect way to enjoy a spiritual community. Keeping Dharma in our hearts like this will definitely be life-changing.
“Our present understanding and experience of Dharma is quite superficial. Our approach remains passive, like someone watching television, and our mind remains as uncontrolled as before.” —Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche
We meet twice a week, Sundays, 4–6PM & Tuesdays, 6:30–8:30PM, online and in-person at Kadampa Meditation Center, New Mexico. The cost is $50/month which includes both Foundation Program and General Program classes (weekly meditation series).
