INTRODUCTION TALK | FRIDAY, 6:30PM with Gen Kelsang Chokyan

Entering the Buddhist Path to Enlightenment

The foundation of Buddhism is refuge in the Three Jewels—Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha. During this event, we will learn what it means to go for refuge in this way and have the opportunity to take Refuge and Bodhisattva Vows.

By taking the Refuge Vow, we enter into Buddhism in general, and by taking Bodhisattva Vows, we enter into Mahayana Buddhism in particular.

Bodhisattva is a friend of the world —someone who, motivated by compassion, promises to complete the path to enlightenment to be able to benefit each and every living being. By taking and keeping the Bodhisattva's Vow, we learn how to use all our daily activities to help others solve their problems and find lasting happiness. In this way, our own life will have purpose and each day of our life will feel very fulfilling.

The event will include the very beautiful and ancient Refuge and Bodhisattva Vow Ceremony, which is the gateway to becoming a Mahayana Buddhist, followed by a 2-Day Retreat. Everyone is welcome to attend whether they are taking the vows or not.

During the retreat sessions, we will spend time developing this beautiful mind of refuge, our actual protection from all pain and problems. Through practicing refuge, we gradually build a stable peace in our mind, increase our experience of joy and freedom, and develop the confidence and strength to make authentic spiritual progress.

Refuge Vow Ceremony
The Refuge Ceremony is an opportunity to receive the profound blessings of the Refuge Vows which are the gateway through which we enter Buddhism. We need permanent liberation from the sufferings of this life and countless future lives. This depends upon entering, making progress on, and completing the Buddhist path to liberation, which in turn depends upon entering Buddhism. We enter Buddhism through the practice of going for refuge. For those who have attended before, it is a chance to receive these blessings again and to renew their commitment. All are welcome to attend whether they are taking the vows or not.

“Dharma is like medicine that prevents the sufferings of this impure cycle of life, Buddha is like the doctor who gives us this medicine, and Sangha are the nurses who assist us.”

Led by Gen Kelsang Chokyan, Resident Teacher at KMC New Mexico. Everyone is welcome to attend any part of this retreat. The Refuge and Bodhisattva Vow Ceremony takes place Saturday at 10am for those who wish to formally become a Buddhist. Please attend the Introduction Talk, Friday at 6pm to learn more about taking Refuge and Bodhisattva Vows. All sessions will be guided by Gen Kelsang Chokyan and include a refuge meditation in conjunction with the chanted prayers, The Hundreds of Deities of the Joyful Land According to Highest Yoga Tantra, available for purchase either in our bookshop or online at Tharpa.com.
